When the sun hits your patio on hot summer days, there’s nothing wrong with throwing some shade in your backyard -in fact, it might just be the only context where throwing shade it’s actually a good thing! If you are looking for ways to build your own project, these DIY patio shade ideas may inspire you to create new designs, like a DIY patio roof, a DIY pergola or other shade structures. 1. Neal’s custom-built patio roof
Neal used tinktube’s building system to put together this impressive DIY patio roof. He designed his project and drafted up a plan first. He decided which connectors he was going to use to create the structure, then ordered everything online, including the 92″ steel pipes. Once everything arrived at his doorstep, Neal got to work. It was an ambitious project for a first-time tubetinker, but it was obviously a success!
2. DIY patio shade structure with pipes
While this structure was built with PVC pipes and fabric, creating the same project using steel pipes and connectors would also be possible -and possibly a better option, too. Using metal instead of PVC would make the structure sturdier, since the building material being heavier and more resistant. The steel will also be less likely to deteriorate in sunlight than PVC. Creating the same type of backyard shade structure with white pipes & connectors would be easy and make the project more durable!
3. Climbing plant backyard shade
Integrating climbing plants into your DIY backyard shade structure will not only increase your feeling of relaxation, it will also bring a pleasant smell to your environment if you choose them well! First, assemble your structure, preferably with resistant building material, to make it more durable. Then add trellis to the roof of your DIY pergola to support the plants.
4. Michael’s DIY pergola
Michael lives in an apartment while saving up to buy a house, so he was looking for a way to create some shade in his backyard while investing as little money as possible. Using tubes and fittings, he found a way to build a removable structure which he will be able to bring with him whenever he moves out: he built a pergola that’s custom-made to fit this uneven-shaped patio. 5. Nathalie’s DIY patio roof
Nathalie lives in a condo. She doesn’t have plenty of room to enjoy the outdoors, but she found a clever way to add some shade to her balcony. She built a DIY pergola that’s customized to fit in the space she has. She first assembled the structure, then fixed tinktube’s fittings and pipes to the railings of the building. She can now enjoy an afternoon out with her favorite book!
6. Fabric sheets DIY terrasse shade
Using colorful and patterns filled pieces of fabric is a great way to add some brightness to your backyard! You can fix those sheets directly to the house, trees, or use steel pipes and connectors, depending on the area you want to protect from the sun.
7. Shade sail
Shade sails are growing in popularity these days. Why? They are easy to set up, relatively inexpensive and they look fabulous in a backyard. This one gives you ideas on how to organize the sails -if you buy more than one-, depending on your backyard configuration. Whatever share you end up creating with your shade sail, you’ll be able to use steel tubes as sturdy poles to fix the sails to.
