Any drummers or percussionists among you, tubetinkers?
Timpano Percussions is a specialized store which sells drums and percussion in Montreal, Quebec -pssst, you can also order online, they ship all over the world-!
They sell a large range of instruments from drumsets, orchestral instruments, and school instruments to a wide variety of clients, including professionals, amateur rhythm passionates, schools, teachers, and music therapists.
Optimizing your space with customized storage systems
The whole store moved to a new location a few months ago, so the team needed to reorganize the layout of the display racks according to the configuration of the new building.
Their challenge was to optimize the space available while showing the products in the most attractive and efficient way possible. They started looking for DIY retail display racks options… and that’s how they eventually became tubetinkers.
For two specific parts of the store, the owner, Philip Hornsey, needed storage and display racks that he could design and customize from A to Z.
Timpano’s DIY storage rack for Asian gongs
His first tinktube project was created to organize and safely store one of Timpano’s most unique products: an impressive set of gongs made by hand, in Thailand.
Interesting fact: this set is the only one available in Canada and covers 4 chromatic octaves. It is often rented by orchestras all over the world, because of its very specific sound!
How Philip designed his pipes and fittings industrial storage rack:
- He adjusted the width of the rack to perfectly fit the gongs, so he didn’t need to add any surface to the structure.
- He created two levels, each of them in different width, and placed the gongs according to their respective dimensions.
- The storage system is built to be very sturdy, to make sure the gongs will stay in place and avoid any damage.
- To make sure the gongs would not get scratched in contact with the metal of the pipes, he used plastic covered tubes. The plastic also helps the gongs stay in place -otherwise, they would be sliding on the tubes-.
As you can see, wall-mounted rack with hooks has also been installed beside the main storage rack, to hang smaller, lighter gongs.

Building your own retail display racks with pipes and fittings
Timpano’s second tinktube project was designed to display various products in the store. Once again, Philip designed the racks in a clever way: because he adjusted the racks’ width to fit the items displayed, he didn’t need to use any surface!
All he had to do was to add a steel tube in the center of each shelf, to ensure that the products on display stayed in place!
The benefits of a DIY customized retail display rack
The result is great: the structure has a professional look, with an industrial edge that fits the style of the store. The rack is also very sturdy and since it was designed and customized with a very specific area of the store in mind, it occupies the whole wall available for display, without overcrowding the space!
