You see them on balconies, stairs and around patios or decks. They’ll keep people from falling off and hurting themselves or they’ll help some of us climb up and down the stairs. In addition to contributing to the safety and comfort of all, railings can enhance the aesthetic harmony of your outdoor design. Did you know you could build your own railings? Creating this kind of DIY project is a good way to save money. In this post, you’ll find easy-to-replicate, low-cost exterior handrail ideas.
All of the ideas below are either made with tinktube or easy to replicate using our products. In all cases, they will bring safety in and around your property. All you have to do is make sure they are properly built to ensure that they are resistant and stable and check the standards set by your city to respect the dimensions allowed. Check it out!
1. DIY exterior deck railings
Here’s the recipe for perfect deck railings:
Ingredients:
- Wood
- Black-painted steel tubes
- Screws
- tinktube connectors (optional in this case)
How to make your deck railings:
Draw your plans and prepare the wood by cutting the pieces you’ll need in advance. Do the same with the tubes. Assemble everything together and fix the rails to the deck… Voilà!
2. Exterior rails by Catheryne
Catheryne is part of tinktube’s community of DIYers. She decided to build her own exterior railings and this picture shows the first finished panel during her building process.
As you can probably tell, the rest of the railings will look just like the first one, giving a very sleek and industrial look to her patio set up!
If you take on a similar project, the main difficulty will be to create holes in the wood for the tubes to fit inside the posts, and the same thing applies to the horizontal wood panels. Once the horizontal parts are embossed into the vertical ones, you’ll have a very sturdy structure that’s going to stand up to any test!
3. DIY exterior porch railing
It’s a universal law: building things -anything- using black-colored steel and barn wood is always a win.
Julie knew it, and that’s why she decided to build her DIY exterior railing with tinktube and a few reclaimed wood panels. The result is absolutely stunning and it blends really well with the brick exterior of her house!
4. DIY rails for stairs
This one is one of the simplest and low-cost exterior handrail ideas presented in this post.
You could replicate the same kind of project with tinktube, using 90° Elbow black connector (HJ-90 fitting) to create the angles of the handrails and structural anchors to fix the rails to the building’s structure.
Then, to ensure the rails are sturdy enough when drilling into brick, drill a pilot hole first using a small masonry bit. Then, use a larger bit and drill again to make a bigger hole.
5. Exterior stair railings
This industrial pipe handrail is another low-cost and simple idea. Depending on how many stairs you have, you won’t need many tubes and if you keep the design as simple as this one, you won’t need to add any other material than steel to create your build.
Because it is free-standing, this DIY handrail also needs to be really well-fixed to the concrete to ensure sturdiness and safety overtime.
